The Royal Aero Club makes a series of
awards each year to recognise the efforts of aviators from member associations who have
achieved notable success in their field. British Aerobatic Association
pilots and officers have received a number of these prestigeous awards
over the years, rubbing shoulders with a wide range of other other
aviators from all walks of life. Here are the BAeA recipients form the
last two years. |

appreciated dedication to BAeA membership, contest registrar and scoring

Jen
Buckenham was introduced to the UK contest aerobatic scene way back
in the early ‘90’s when husband Nick encouraged her to meet the gang at
a British Aerobatic Association competition one sunny day at Fenland,
where he was competing in his Pitts Special. History records a well
maintained indifference until the penny dropped that those present were
actually a pretty interesting assortment of people, since when her
involvement has grown beyond all expectations – to the BAeA’s
considerable benefit.
Over the years Jen has
become increasingly involved in core BAeA jobs and activities, first
taking over the membership role and operation of the contest scoring
system, thereby of course ensuring a good deal of contact with all those
interesting pilot people. Then came editorship of the Association’s
bi-monthly magazine and a ‘First 25 Years’ booklet about the BAeA, and
more recently the negotiation role with UK airfield operators to plan
and schedule our busy aerobatic contest calendar.
Jen’s dedication led to
honorary membership of the Association in the late 90’s, and more
recently board directorship with a busy portfolio built around the
planning of UK aerobatic competitions, control of the registration and
scoring office, and management of membership and contest finances. BAeA
events just wouldn’t be the same now without her forthright control and
cheery resolution of the inevitable range of queries.
With recent forays by Nick
into chief judge duties at World and Continental aerobatic championships
providing increased opportunities for Jen to extend her magic to a far
wider international audience, the range of people now seeing Brits in
the right places as fine managers of sporting excellence continues to
grow. Jen is a worthy ambassador for the UK way of aerobatic event
management, and a most deserving recipient of the Royal Aero
Club Certificate of Appreciation. |

David
Cowden started work to establish the British Aerobatic Foundation (BAeF)
in 2004.
The Foundation was set up in 2005 to raise funds to provide extensive
aerobatic training for talented young pilots and for members of the
British Unlimited Team in their preparation for, and participation in,
European and World aerobatic championships. The vision of the BAeF was
to see British aerobatic pilots among medal winners at Unlimited
European or World Championships.
Since the Foundation started work, it has funded training for a number
of selected young novice pilots who have gone on to win competitions in
both Standard and Intermediate Categories. These young aviators have
learned the benefits of competitive flying and have the prospect of
further years of competition and elevation to the International arena.
The Foundation's work in supporting training camps for the Unlimited
Team has seen the UK regularly in the top 5 places at World or European
level over the last 7 years, including Bronze Medals in European
Championships, and has enabled three different British pilots to gain
hard-won top-10 individual places in these extremely demanding events.
For his determination, perseverance and generosity in pursuit of these
endeavours, David Cowden has earned the respect of the aerobatic
community across the whole UK and abroad. On behalf of the BAeF, he is a
most worthy recipient of the Royal Aero Club Certificate of
Appreciation. |
