Fenland, McAully & Nigel Newbold Trophies - 1999

At last, the Gods smiled and allowed us to enjoy a real and rare summers weekend with some great flying, at the friendly Fenland Flying club in rural Lincolnshire. Things started well when, on Friday evening, we got news that the British Team had come third overall in the Advanced World Championships in the Czech Republic,  with Nick Buckenham finishing at 10th overall, and all others in the top half of 60 results! For more on this news, click here

Saturday was a late start due to mist, although this quickly burnt away by about 10:30, leaving a clear blue sky for all. In summary, the first three at Beginners level, were Adrian Judd, in the Chipmunk, from Trevor Bailey in a C152, followed by Sue Hawkridge, again in a C-152. The Fenland trophy was won by Phil O'Donoghue, in his home-built Lazer, followed by David Copse in a Pitts S2A, and Adrian Howe who came third, in the ever popular Slingsby T67M. The Nigel Newbold Trophy was awarded to Eddie Goggins of Dublin, who flew G-WREN another S2A, while Mark Waite in the YAK55, was second, and Nick Bloom, last years winner, came third in his trusty Stampe.   Final results of Standard Gp2+3 was , David Copse, followed within 0.03% by Phil O'Donoghue, phew! then Adrian Howe.  David Copse therefore won the McAully Trophy, one of the BAeA's oldest trophies, a glass cased model of the Tiger Club''s D.H. Moth, G-ACDC and all this in only his second competition. Well done David!

In amongst all this excitement, we were treated to a stunning display by Ex- British Champion Diana Britten, after she had spent a morning on the judging line. Later in the afternoon, we were assisted on the Judging line by Red Arrows Pilot, RED 8 , Ian Smith, who kindly arranged a Fly-By from his team, the Red Arrows, marking the start of Sunday's flying.

All in all a great day!
