The South Wales Open Championships - 1999
Probably the best field we've ever established for this event groped their way
to
Swansea Airport, for advanced and unlimited pilots this representing the
deferred
late-season 1998 nationals from Sywell so comprehensively wrecked by haze.
This
time however strong winds and a cloud-base somewhat lower than that required
were the
unwanted intruders, but almost everyone got there and enough sequences were
completed
at every level to assign the trophies. The 4 minute free-style however was a
distinct
casualty, so the David Perrin Trophy became a 1998 "pass".
Having 'lost' the canopy from his CAP-222, Alan Cassidy borrowed Tom Cassell's
CAP-232
to good effect to take the retrospective title of 1998 Unlimited National
Champion.
Mark Jefferies ran away with the similar Advanced title, whilst a delighted
Simon Cattlin
bagged his first gold at Intermediate in the gaudy Yak-55.
Eric Marsh was Contest Director, Ben Ellis and Bob Oliver shared the Chief
Judges'
duties over the three days, and Jen Buckenham ran the photocopying and computer
bureau.
The weather at Sleap just has to be better!!
