The Fenland and McAully Trophies - 2000
|
The Fenland and McAully competition had a record number of entries, with 11 Beginners,
25 Standard and 13 Intermediate pilots registered.
The Friday afternoon running of the Beginners competition took place in glorious
sunshine; the kind of weather we have come to expect from Fenland over the past three
years since our return to the venue.
It was good to see the two DHC-1's from the BA flying club there to compete for the first
time, one of which was piloted by Australian Martin Dicker. Making a welcome return was
G-WREN piloted by NFC member Alex Willis. The last time I saw WREN compete at Fenland was
probably the very first competition I ever attended, when there was a bit of bother
with the tail wheel following an argument with the runway lighting! Fortunately not
repeated on this occasion.
Polly Whitehead, a student of the Tom Cassells School of Life was the overall winner at
Beginners, with BAFC member Phillip Cottrell taking second place and Alan Wood a closely
contested third place.
Sadly the climate took a turn for the worse and Saturday was a 'dreary' day with a
cloud base that did not rise above 1200 feet all day; Sunday morning boded no better
and the decision to abandon the contest was made!
Tom Cassells was CD. Ben Ellis was Chief Judge assisted in his deliberations by
Julie Wood, Ian Scott, and Richard Gee. Jen Buckenham was registrar and scorer.
