It was a delight to visit Saltby for the start of the 2000 Glider
Nationals, the drive to the venue was beautiful and although rather windy
it was a balmy day (although I must have been barmy to leave home so
early!).
There were 7 pilots to fly at Sports level, including newcomers Pat
Farrelly and David Ockleton from the Army Gliding Club, 4 at Intermediate
level and 5 at Unlimited. Paul Conran and Jamie Allan were the first
pilots to fly on the Thursday morning, following which Ian Tunstall
'tested the water' and found that the winds had strengthened and it was
unflyable! The time was not wasted as a valuable discussion about the
competition calendar for the next year resulted in the decision to have
three competitions in 2001, two of which would be early in the year and
the third would be in September. At 6 pm the decision to abandon the
competition for the day was made - just in time to get to the pub!
The weather on the remaining three days was a distinct improvement and all
the proposed sequences were flown at all levels. Malcolm Hodgson won the
Sports class, Graham Saw won Intermediate in the ageing Lunak and
Guy Westgate won the Unlimited level in the Fox.
Jim Duthie was the CD and the judging team included Dick Happs, Debbie
Bilham, Lionel Sole, Ray Stoward and Ben Ellis. Sam Jones BC was Chief
Judge and did an excellent job of rounding up the judges and collecting
the paperwork! Jen Buckenham did the registration and someone else was the
scorer....
