Well, there's not a lot to say really - 2001 weather rules, KO! As
the murk gathered on Friday afternoon it seemed appropriate to delay the
Beginners class until the next morning, particularly since only Jack
Sherrif had arrived.... at Saturday's 0800 briefing however rather less
than 2,000ft QFE greeted us atop Compton's lovely hill, and when it (sort
of) cleared JS was once again in a class (all) of his own. The
intermediate pilots then enjoyed improving atmospheric clarity, from which
Gerald Cooper once again emerged at the front of the queue. Although
the advanced competitors followed without a break the clouds had other
ideas, and with increasingly frequent returns of the judging line to the
clubhouse it was Dave Kaberry who finally decided that enough was enough
and reluctantly CD Ben Ellis called it a day. The Don Henry numbers at
that stage are presented here out of interest, the Trophy itself remaining
unused.
Ben Ellis was CD, Graham Hills' judges
were Steve Todd, Bob Oliver, Alan Cassidy, Dick Happs, Tony Lloyd and
yours truly, Jen B ran the abacus and lots of other people helped. A
thousand thanks to Clive Hughes and the Compton Abbas team, ten thousand
curses at the weather.
