The Icicle & Icicle Surprise
Trophies - 2001
So - one week on from Dunstable, and by and large we got the same deal
from the weatherman.... a lousy Saturday (with quite a bit of rain this
time) but no trouble running the whole show on Sunday in clear (but
suitably icy!!) conditions. On our first visit to Elvington we had a
few bridges to build and friends to make, but this is certainly one venue
to which we'd like to return. Sporting a fantastic 3km x 62m
concrete runway and a 60 acre apron on which Saturday's group of arrivals
looked positively lost, the site also boasts an extremely interesting
museum of 40's RAF folklore and a hangar stuffed with both earlier and
later aeroplanes that we were able to examine in detail during Saturday's
gloom. I digress....
Although Sunday's field was slightly reduced from day-1 it tried hard to make up in quality for the loss of
quantity. This year the known and an unknown were flown at both
levels, making for a much more 'normal' contest on this traditionally
'different' day. The advanced and unlimited pilots as usual called
themselves 'open' (for what, one might ask??) whilst quite a few faces at
intermediate were having their first outing away from the standard level
crowd. It was the indeterminates who kicked off the proceedings, the
competition zone (box to you) using merely the centre third of the vast
runway with the judges huddled line abreast across the centre, whilst a
large crowd of motorcycle racers howled round the aforementioned apron at
the museum end and a bunch of radio controlled speed model aircraft wazzed
circuits like midges at the other at a quite extraordinary speed.
Amazing!
By lunch-time David Copse in newly acquired Pitts
G-WILD narrowly led the intermediate known from last year's standard
tyro Gerald Cooper, whilst amongst the big boys BAeA-VC Tom Cassells
headed the queue with young Scrope K snapping at his heels in the
just-rebuilt triple-2. After a brief trip to the restaurant and general thawing of
frozen judges etc. both levels flew a brisk unknown sequence, during which
master Copse unfortunately zeroed two key figures and Kester didn't quite
close the elusive gap to our Tom's borrowed 232. So - Tom Cassells
carried the Icicle Trophy away for the undoubted exercise of his hamsters
for a year, and Gerald Cooper started 2001 at intermediate as no doubt he
wishes to go on. To keep faith with tradition there was also of
course a "Surprise", big Tom's 82% here putting him way ahead of
the rest of the crowd.
Eric Marsh ably ran the CD's chair,
Chairman Ben and Cristelle Askew, Gareth Roberts and Nick B judged the
fun, and Jen B drove the electronics to provide the results. We all
enjoyed it - roll on the next one! (but do keep an eye on the
'Update'
page for the latest on the foot and mouth situation).
