The last event of the season, the last chance for the weather gods to
smile..... well, no change there then!
The beginners class on Friday afternoon
sported the usual astounding field of entries, this time just a couple
failing to make their way there. The standard of flying was pretty varied
- Costas Lampropoulo was first up and promptly flew the whole plot (except
the final cross-box roll) in the wrong direction, but those that followed
spotted his cunningly flown error and avoided that little trap. Tom
Richards managed it best in one of the many Slingsby's present, Julian
Murfitt was close behind, octogenarian Harry Mason claimed third spot, and
the rest just refused to let Costas off the end of the list. You follow in
the footsteps of many well known pilots, Costas....
Saturday's weather however was just
dreadful until - at around 2:00pm - blue sky appeared and judges were
hastily despatched.... but after only three (or was it four?) flights the
box became obscured by tumbling clag at about 1500ft, and the inevitable
halt drove any chance of a 'proper' competition away from reality. At this
late stage all CD Tom Cassells could do was offer the judges' services
if/when the clouds relaxed their grip, leaving competitors to decide
whether to cut and run for home. In the event most of the Standard pilots
remained to enjoy a rather late 'might-have-been' unknown affair, from
which John Dixons Pitts emerged victorious some way ahead of big Ollie
Johnstone and Aiden Grimley in Yaks 55M and 52. With few remaining at
intermediate, advanced and unlimited the plucky winners at these levels
were eventually awarded special BAeA lollipops for their efforts, whilst
at least John Dixon got a real gong.
Chief Judge Graham Hill drove a team
comprising Steve Green, Ben Ellis, Nick Buckenham, Julie Woods, Alan
Cassidy, Tony Lloyd, John Paulson and Steve Todd, whilst Jen B ran the
numbers game to provide the results.
So - end of term, and all of seven
months to go 'till the Icicle comes our way to open up the 2002 box.
See you all next year!
