Fenland 2004 – in brief
When the sun shines, Fenland is lovely. When it is misty and drizzly,
Fenland Aero Club staff and members are lovely! We had CAVOK, mist, drizzle,
haze, low clouds, puffy clouds and back to CAVOK; we had it all several
times. Uninterrupted CAVOK on Friday saw the Beginners and both scheduled
Intermediate sequences polished off by 18.00 in time for the first briefing
for Standard, and collation of the paperwork for the “extra three” to
facilitate an early start on Saturday. The Saturday briefing at 08.00 was
well attended but pointless. We started flying at 15.00 and polished off the
Standard Known + 3 and an extra Intermediate Unknown by 18.30. Pilots were
so keen to follow my entreaty not to leave large gaps in the flying that at
one stage we had two in the aerial hold (or stack) and three with engines
running on the ground, plus one in the box!
The forecast for Sunday was worse than for
Saturday, so first briefing was set for 10.00. We flew from 13.45, with
those cotton wool blobs in the box. By the time we finished around 15.30, it
was CAVOK…but bad ‘up north’. For the full story, wait for ANR but Ian
Barrett took Beginners in G-YAKH from David Shutter in the venerable G-LOOP
and Tom Leader in the Robin, G-RAFC. At Intermediate, the net result for the
Fenland Trophy was a win for Ian Trask in his YAK 55 from Clive Butler in
his Extra 230 and Alex Caramella in the Extra 300. The McAully trophy was
well won by Richard Buchan in G-OODI from Dave Cowden in the S2A G-TIII with
Neil Bigrigg third in G-BTUL.
Steve Green was an admirable Chief Judge,
with others judging over the weekend including Graham Hill, Julie Wood,
Robert Tinkler, Peter Macintosh, Polly Whitehead and the CD. Assistants
included several pilots and the ones I can remember were Bernie, Sandra,
Clive Butler, John Vize, Ian Scott, Roger Graham and Elise. Anne responded
to our need for a registrar and scorer. I am already looking forward to
seeing old friends again at Fenland in 2005.
