CD's Report
The
first aerobatic competition of the season for the Dan Smith Memorial Trophy
was held at Dunstable in very breezy conditions on 1st and 2nd of April.
Seventeen competitors flew a short Sports programme under a 3,000 ft showery
cloud-base. A splendid social meal that included a birthday celebration for
Chris Cain was held on Saturday evening, but on Sunday early sunshine
deteriorated with high winds, turbulence and inadequate cloud-base that
prevented any further competition flying.
The after lunch prize-giving included the
usual banter as Guy Westgate received the gold medal, closely followed by
Steve Jarvis silver and Mike Newbound bronze. The Dan Smith Trophy awarded
to the highest placed sports pilot was retained by Patrick Greer in sixth
place.
My thanks to Steve Green (Chief Judge) and
his band of judges and assistants, Cindy Copsey for admin., scoring and
paperwork, the competitors for safe disciplined flying and to our hosts
London Gliding Club for use of facilities and gliders.
