CD's Report
Early morning mist gave way to milky sunshine and strong north-easterly
winds as fourteen competitors were launched in good time to fly the first
known programme on Saturday morning. The wind curling down the face of the
Dunstable Downs and across the airfield provided a turbulent and challenging
aero-tow to 4,000ft, and
a
tendency amongst pilots to
underestimate the wind strength at height caused some difficulty in staying
in the aerobatic box.
Pressing on, the second known
sequence was flown in reducing visibility, and almost without warning a
short shower of rain
and sleet just after Paul Moslin had launched prompted a rapid recall. A
temporary improvement allowed all remaining pilots to get airborne, although
two elected to not fly the programme in the reduced visibility. The
traditional good evening meal in the London Gliding Club restaurant with a
few drinks rounded off a pretty successful but very cold day.
Sunday dawned with similar
weather, and an attempt to fly the unknown sequence was regrettably
abandoned at mid-day due to ever stronger winds and poorer visibility. The
trophy and medals were presented by Andy Roch, Dunstable's smiling CFI. The
Dan Smith Memorial Trophy, awarded to the first Sports level glider pilot,
and this year also the overall winner's Gold medal both went to first timer
Jon Gowdy. His mentor Guy Westgate, a tad over one percent behind, bagged
the Silver medal, and our most welcome visitor Jan Rolinek from the Czech
Republic took the Bronze.
The CD thanked all of the
competitors for their good safe airmanship in the conditions. Thanks also to
Steve Green and his team of Judges and assistants, and to scorer Cindy
Copsey with Nick B in attendance driving the BAeA's new Fair Play scoring
system at it's first outing. All together a very pleasant weekend.
