CD's Report
The great joy of being a contest director is the all encompassing power
it brings. That being the case I was a bit put out to arrive at Saltby to
discover that THE Fox was u/s due to a meeting with a larger than usual
undulation in the Saltby greensward at touchdown. There being no replacement
aircraft available at short, or even long, notice, the first decision was
made for me, scrap the unlimited class, but what to do with the pilots? (
non-libelous answers on a postcard...)
Being obliged to consult the rule books
before anything has left the ground is not my idea of fun, however the two
unlimited pilots who were good enough to turn up were legally entitled to
drop to intermediate thus making Caroline Bois' Pilatus B4 a very popular
glider.
The weather was fairly kind, with the
cloud base lifting slowly to an acceptable level on both days. The beginners
gave a very creditable performance with 74% from Michael Corcoran and 65%
from Stefan Astley.
Graham Saw in the Lunak (it's Check mate...) took the Open trophy with 68%
overall with Chris Cain second at 63% and Brian Griffin 56% third.
The "Fun Programme" on Saturday produced
some interestingly shaped figures and proved that at any level the quarter
clover is tricky to fly well. Graham Saw once again prevailed with an
excellent 83.27%, Andy Cunningham was runner up with Brian Griffin in third
place.
Thanks to Les Merritt and all at Saltby
for your excellent hospitality, see you next year!
