Once again the sun shone on the
righteous. Whilst the facilities at Little Gransden are a little rudimentary
the addition of a club-house is a good sign of things to come. This is an
airfield that typifies our green and

wonderful land; a fascinating variety of planes, enthusiastic people just
doing what they love doing and all seemingly cut off from the modern world
of work and hassle. This is how it should be. The sun is always bright
here
and Mark was a generous host. The
trial flights and competition were all of a good standard, remarkably so in
fact. I suspect that this is the combination of talent and a willingness to
take instruction; a combination that will always see people progress
rapidly. With most
beginners
flying behind a 6 cylinder Lycoming none gave the impression of being
dragged around the sky in the way one might of expected. At the other end of
the scale Chris Sills made the C152 look less demanding than it undoubtedly
is.
The weather remained kind all day; clouds
no problem, the sun winning most of the time and a brisk westerly breeze
just to make people think about positioning. By 5pm, 28 flights after a
10.30 start, the plaque was won by Stephen French. A tremendous flight in
his Extra300L less than a year from gaining his PPL – one to watch I would
say. Alan George and Philip Massetti coming in 2nd and 3rd. In fact I hope
all will keep going. Aerobatics is in rude health.
The competition day was broken by Mark
Jefferies showing what talent and 20 years of competing can produce – a
wonderful noise, lots of smoke and a fascinating display. He likes to remind
everyone who remains the ‘Ace of the Base’ here!

No dramas to report although one local competitor may find that ATC from
Stansted become an enthusiastic pen-pal after an alleged spot of airspace
burglary. But at least the visitors behaved themselves! For me it was a
pleasure with a slick judging team led by Lynne and the ever-calm Jen
working her magic and making everything seem just sooo easy. Most of all a
wonderful bunch of great new pilots with a supporting cast of experienced
instructors. Thanks to all.
