The Fenland and McAully Trophies - 2010

CD's Report

Two days, two One Designs, two impressive wins.  And some truly excellent weather at lovely Fenland, and so on .... how could we possibly improve on that? In truth this was an absorbing couple of days from all manner of viewpoints, if nothing else rubbing home the absolute truth that you have to be pretty determined and fly consistently well to win at either Standard or Intermediate these days, s
uch is the level of skill now most often on display. This of course is what competiton is all about, and there wasn't too much that was flukey about the wins at Fenland this weekend.

For Intermediate we have just a couple of 'big' competitions that stand out from the rest, offering
four sequences over two days to show not only who can fly well but also who has the nerve to keep their act together to the end. Amid all the banter and joshing a good deal of respect emerges for those at the head of the queue, while for once there's enough flexibility in the whole deal to try and make up lost ground after an unexpected earlier booboo. For Standard pilots this is also a big weekend but for different reasons, the curious McAully style known+3 figures sequence calling for reserves of mental strength and persistance somewhat above the usual ten-figure allotment - and this weekend the unknown sequence was quite a teaser too.

On Friday we knew it would be hot from the start, but even for England it was a 30° corker of a day. Briefing pilots to remain calm, stay in the shade and drink lots of water seems strange at a BAeA event, but that - and a few other more familiar things - were the essential ingredients of the mid-day delivery in the baking Portakabin at the corner of Fenland's parking lot. We also had one Beginner to wedge in between the Intermediate sequences, former Loop Event participant Mark Thomas prividing a thin dividing line between two hard fought Friday sequences.

Right from the get-go Phil Burgess and his One-Design just had to be the combination to beat, and a goodly queue of beady eyed pilots knew just how to do that ... Charlie Kimbell was the only one to pip the Bright Green Machine in the known, with David Thompson's Laser snoring along close behind. In the ensuing Free however Phil had the measure of it, with David snapping at his heels and an on-form Andrew Barlow in third. After the Intermediate known sequence and a suitable judging line gasp for refreshment (and the lo
o) Mark Thomas was able to show us how well he could really do the Beginners job, following a rather less sparkling 19th place at the Little Gransden Loop event. See you again soon, Mark!

Saturday's dawn promised more of the Friday heat, although in the end an intermittent high overcast kept things almost in check. The Intermediates kicked off first, with Phil able to ever-so-slightly improve his position ahead of the jostling pack. This was quite serious stuff now, with the leading four all above 75% - real reputations at stake. Before a late'ish lunch the McAully sequence was completely flown, and here Ed Cyster established a slender 10-point advantage over the ever improving Jez Burgoin and new man Andy Hill driving the "other" red One-Design. An interesting Biplane-Vs-Monoplane afternoon promised much.

With everything now at stake ..... Phil completely forgot the final figure - and even so made over 73%, Charlie's less than great sequence (but still over 71% !) didn't help his cause, David-T pushed all he could and made it to the head of this queue with a tremendous 80.4% ..... but still the green monoplane scraped in ahead of the rest. Hard work or what? At Standard Paul Brice pulled out all the stops with a superb 80% plus, newcomers Colin Davidson and Andy Hill contributing their own excellent efforts to fill the next two places ..... with the result that Andy clawed his way to the head of the consolidated results, with Paul and Ed close behind.

Both Chief Judge Ian Scott and I agreed that we had seen a truly excellent series of high quality flights, with inevitably just a few bum ones thrown in for good measure. A few years ago anything into the 70% region would normally ensure that you were in the medals - but this is not often the case now, the standard just goes up and up. Well done to the winners, commiserations to the rest - you'll just have to take the medicine, perhaps with a tad more training, and try again.

Fenland were just wonderful, Katie's club restaurant did a roaring trade, and
if it weren't for some subsequent over-charging scares courtesy of the idiot Tokheim pump system it would all have been just perfect.

See you at Conington for the Nationals!
