CD's Report
Briefings
started at 9.30 with local pilot Lauren Richardson giving instructions on
the airfield procedures and CJ David Jenkins explaining to the entrants what
he and his team were looking for in the 5 figure sequence.
The format for the beginners events is that each pilot flies the same
sequence twice, the goal being to score better in the second flight. During
the first flight the pilots get a ten minute warm up a few miles from the
airfield and then return to the box for the Scored and critiqued element. The scores of the second flight are the ones that count as the event
results.
With 9 entrants we were never going to be under much time pressure. However
with 7 pilots in the pair of Extra 200`s the gaps between flights were bound
to be slightly extended. Luke Hall and Adrian Willis both have this down to
a fine art by now and changes of pilot and splashes of fuel were slickly
done.
By 12.45 the first flight was complete and the Judges retreated from
their position in a field of cut Hay. Lunch took place while the Hay was
turned.
During the break more than a few of us really enjoyed the spectacle of some
wonderful vintage aeroplanes emerging from their hangers to go aloft and be
properly enjoyed as flying machines. Little Gransden is not a `Spam Can`
airfield at all, it is full of interesting aeroplanes, most of them
immaculate and in regular use. I think the airfields in Heaven are probably
similarly equipped.
The balance of sleek, no compromise aerobatic machinery
to Radial engined Gentleman’s carriages is spot on, with a healthy
population of Pitts, Tiger Moths, Taylor Monoplanes and other `proper`
aircraft as well. Not a `Glass Cockpit` plastic tourer in sight!
By the time we resumed for the second flight it was very hot. Certainly well
over 30 degrees, and the small crowd of spectators wisely stayed put in the
shade.
The Hard working Extra 200`s were feeling the heat too. Time to climb
was reported as “double what it normally is 2 up” by Adrian. But everybody
coped; there were some loops which ran out of energy too soon before their
apex, and a few pilots, who like many before them, ironed out a mistake from
the morning only to meet its cousin in the afternoon. But overall a good job
by everybody with sound airmanship and safe conduct throughout.
Very well done to all the entrants. We hope to se you again soon. Special
thanks to Mark Jeffries and Family for the use of their lovely airfield.
Thanks also to David Jenkins and his judging team, David’s daughter Alexis
for very calmly and efficiently feeding us all. To Jen Buckenham and Brian
McCartney for driving the computer and to all the BAeA members who were on
hand to help the pilots understand their judging sheets and generally offer
encouragement.
