CD's Report
For some time the final contest of the season was the
National Championship held at a then dilapidated Wickenby, and it
was always quite emotional to see formations of our aeroplanes
flying into the sunset at the end of yet another summer. Sandtoft
yesterday did not quite convey such romantic sentiments, but it does
signify semi-hibernation for many,
until re-emergence for more jousting next spring.
By then your BAeA committee will have
convened several times to discuss past and future contests, when the
views of the membership will be duly
considered. One such topic will be the contentious matter of contest
start time, which was a factor at Sandtoft. Long ago a briefing was
not considered vital, so pilots strolled in when they felt like it.
A full and comprehensive briefing was soon considered essential, and
so made mandatory, which ruling spawned numerous and usually
unacceptable excuses from tardy pilots as to why they had failed to
attend. Positioning the previous day therefore became the safer if
more expensive option, with early-next-morning running the risk of
lateness exclusion. (Issuance of Unknowns on the eve of a contest
also caused controversy, so this too will be addressed by your
committee in its deliberations).
Sandtofts later start seemed
to make it a fairly low risk for same-day transit, but whilst the
weather in the north was flyable, in the south it was not, thus
grounding several competitors. So many in fact that it was decided
exceptionally to hold two briefings: one for those already there
(mainly Advanced pilots), and another for those en route (mainly
Intermediate pilots).
Fortuitously the plan worked,
for briefing was able to be held at 1100, followed by first flight
(ie Advanced) soon after, that group completing around noon, by
which time the stranded pilots had arrived. A second briefing was
held over the lunch break, then pilots and judges co-operated and
co-ordinated so that, by 1700, six Advanced and five Intermediate
pilots had each flown two Unknowns after ample time for preparation.
Whilst convinced that his roll/flick figure had been misjudged,
longstanding member Ron Allan (good to see his next generation pilot
son there) sportingly agreed to withdraw a protest in the interest
of expediting the results.
Eric Marsh as Contest
Director ended the event by thanking ALL who had contributed to the
days success, including: Chief Judge Ian Scott with Nick Buckenham
and Peter MacIntosh (ace weather forecaster all the way from
Scotland), assisted by Julie Wood, John Royce, John Askew and Emma
Sik; Scorers Jen and Jack Buckenham; Sandtoft personnel headed by
Nikki Quean and Ray Price et al; and, as ever, our team of ace
pilots.
The results are listed below, and awards were
presented by Nikki Quean. Alas one trophy had not been returned, so
Nikki quickly prepared a plane-shaped cake, which did not fool -
though did please - the recipient. (This is not the first time a
trophy has not been returned, and as BAeA guardian of our trophies I
would remind all holders that it is their duty to ensure a trophy is
at the venue in time for the next winner to receive it).
Happy Christmas!
