CD's Report
Photos mostly from Leif Culpin
Part of me wants to write a comprehensive report
detailing every twist and turn in the run up to the contest and how
we strove to overcome obstacles to run the event. Another part of me
just wants to write "we
came,
we competed, some celebrated, others commiserated and then we went
home". The reality is somewhere in the middle.
We were
blessed with good weather (one of the best days of the year so far)
and a healthy turnout of well-motivated and co-operative pilots.
We
also had the advantage of a good turnout of experienced judges. So
when we needed to make sure we completed the contest on Saturday (to
avoid a conflict with the Breighton Spring fly-in on Sunday) we were
able to run two judging teams. While this was intended to allow us
to continue flying over lunchtime, it had the unintended benefit of
making the job slightly less
onerous for the judges and assistants.
I know getting enough judges to any contest is a perennial struggle,
but in the event that we ever have enough judges I would encourage
the reproduction of this arrangement. It also had the advantage that
we continued to fly during some of the best weather during the day.
The combination of good weather, good humour and enthusiastic
co-operation meant that we romped
through the contest and ran 40 odd
flights over 5 sequences and were still finished in time for tea and
cakes at a reasonable time.
Although I was there (honestly!),
I saw less of the flying at this event than any other competition
I’ve ever been to. As such I don’t feel qualified to make any
comment on the flying.
Please see the results below for the details!
However, I can say the conduct of the
competitors was outstanding. I
saw a high level of airmanship and courtesy and we never had a
single complaint from either local pilots or residents all day. In
my mind that makes Rule 1 met in full (and Rules 2
and 3 were
equally well complied with).
I omitted to thank the judges
properly during the awards presentation so will do so here. I’ve
said before that I’m always amazed that anyone volunteers to judge,
those who’ve done it will know it’s extraordinarily hard work! So
the fact that so many volunteered is a testament to the enthusiasm
and commitment that keeps the BAeA a vibrant and successful
organisation. A sincere "thank you" to all the judges and assistants
who helped out at this event.
I should also compliment Brian
McCartney on the briefing he gave to the Beginners
competitors. I
had a number of competitors (and non-competitors) who said it was
the best briefing they’d ever heard. It was thorough and reassuring
in equal measure. This is just the sort of thing that will help
people into our sport. Thank you Brian.
Lastly I can’t say
enough good things about the Buckenhams. We all see Jen and Nick at
contests, taking on all sorts of tasks that we are all happy to let
them do
(probably thankful that we don’t have
to do them!), but you
only see the graceful part of the swan. What you don’t see unless
you get involved in running one of these events is the enormous
amount of work that goes on behind the scenes (the frantic paddling
part of the swan!). If it wasn’t for their experience, enthusiasm,
diligence, flexibility and damned hard work we’d all be a lot worse
off at any of these events. I for one am eternally grateful that
they still dedicate so much of their time to our sport.
