CD's Report
The Saltby open being the last comp of the season traditionally
marks the start of winter, this year was no exception with the
forecast looking rather pessimistic. Day 1 dawned and the sky looked
grim; Stuart's usual comprehensive weather brief showed the forecast
for the day was also rather poor with no realistic prospect for
flying on the Friday. We adjourned to the bacon rolls and the day
was scrubbed. The forecast for Saturday looked better and the delay did
allow for some last minute re-organisation of flight orders and
judging to give us the best coverage on the flight and judging
lines. This helped as we were very short of judges and assistants.
Saturday looked a lot better, and the forecast for the day was
promising with good weather only marred by a small possibility of
thunderstorms later. Flying got underway quickly and the rather
complex flight order to allow for pilot judges to be swapped in as
classes changed and allow for the heavily used K21 worked better
than I had expected, proof that pilots can be herded if you can find
enough incentive.
By late afternoon we had completed about 60% of the comp and with a
promising forecast for Sunday it was looking good when the forecast
thunderstorms seemed to be looming in the distance. After one of the
pilots returned without any aerobatics having been towed through
rain and cloud and the tug pilots reported that it looked like we
would be under water within 20 mins we broke for the day and started
packing up.
Sunday morning; no wait, at the last minute our chief judge pointed
out that we needed one more sports flight to allow the previous
scores of a judge not available on Sunday to count, although it
looked rather dark in the distance we recalled the K21 and a rather
doubtful pilot and after some debate he took off into the gloom.
By
this time most of the rest of the gliders and pilots were starting
to pack the hanger and anticipating beer and the barbeque.
The large dark cloud passed, the pilot flew, and as he did so the
sky brightened again. A very rapid reversal of packing and much running
about got the remaining pilots back on line, and flying continued to
allow the remaining competition flights to be completed just in
time for the barbeque.
Great response by all present, pessimistic initial call from the CD
rescued by the enthusiastic team of pilots and judges let us finish
all the flying without having to use our reserve day.
Sunday
arrived; for real this time and we had a slightly later start with
just 2 flights to complete having decided to give the beginners a
second go. This was completed in short order in the good weather, and
we retired to the club for the prizes and remainder of the
previous nights feast.
As always the team of caterers, tug pilots, instructors and members
at Saltby helped make this a good event and a fun weekend and I
thank them and the judges for making this another successful
competition. |
