CD's Report
I’ve heard a few comments during this lovely summer
that we’ve been enjoying, that there doesn’t seem to be many wasps
this year. Well that’s because they’re all at Sherburn in Elmet
airfield where we gathered for the annual battle for the Tiger
Trophy. Unfortunately, that lovely summer looked like deserting us
for a few days, right at the wrong time.
The Friday evening before we
were due kick off was extremely wet, so much so that when we arrived
at the airfield on Saturday morning, the car park and many other
areas were flooded. Not too much of a problem, you might think, but
the electricity had also given up its’ flow. No fuel, no radio, no
scoring ‘puter but worst of all, no kettle! A few brave contenders
had snuck in on Friday afternoon, one all the way from Belgium, but
Saturdays’ weather prevented arrivals from those still stranded and
was never really going to be good enough for a competition. So, as
the briefing time systematically inch-wormed its way through the
day, the arrival of a huge weather cell made the call very easy –
see you all tomorrow.
Sunday. Low cloud and low
viz, but at least the kettle was working. Despite the conditions
outside, a full briefing went ahead at 0930hrs so that we could
scramble without delay if a miracle clearance suddenly happened. We
had to wait until 1200hrs before the little blue bits in the sky
began to grow. I had set a completion time of 1600hrs to allow
pilots time to fly home. We had 3hrs of flying to get through so we
had to be flying by 1300hrs or it was game over. At 1230hrs, the
cloud was still too low but the blue bits were now bigger than the
white bits and pilot number one, Aidan Smith, would give it a go as
the gaps were now quite large. At 1255hrs, he entered the box and
subsequently completed his sequence. Could we keep this up, it still
didn’t look certain? Pilots 3 & 4 elected to land without
completing, and for very just reasons too, so it was looking like it
was all over, as time margins were so tight, however, as the next
standard pilot was already at the hold, I let him have a look at the
box for himself and to our delight, the cloud had shot up to our
minima and we were off and running.
Standard was completed after
the necessary re-flights, with Aidan taking the bronze in the Sleap
Slingsby and silver for Chris, top‘tache, Sills, but the gold would
go to David Brown flying the Cassells Extra 200. Intermediate were
next up and the tricky sequence caught a few out. Steve Hipwell won
here in the Extra 230 with John Scott second in his Cap 10. The
bronze however, went home across the Channel to Belgium with
Alexander van den Broeck in his Extra 200. Advanced again found some
casualties. Tony Maxwell took the bronze behind David Jenkins in
second. But it was the man in gold medal position who had
entertained everyone within earshot of a radio tuned to the safety
frequency. As he talked himself through his inverted spin, he
inadvertently pressed the PTT button and broadcast, “Right foot,
left stick!” in the unmistakable Scottish accent that belonged to
wee Ron Allen. Personally, I was looking forward to listening to his
commentary on the rest of his flight but alas, he let go of the
button.
Of course it was the Tiger Trophy that was the big
prize. Festooned with illustrious names, past and present, it’s got
to be one of the most impressive trophies in our arsenal, it’s
certainly the heaviest, but as the final competitor wing rocked into
the box, the trophy had yet to arrive! Long story but in the end Ed
Yard kindly volunteered to ferry the trophy by air as soon as the
weather at Waltham cleared. He landed literally moments before the
competition ended – and then his tailwheel assembly broke and
wrecked the bottom of his rudder! Poor chap was only doing us a
favour. Thank you again Ed. We were all very grateful, even if I did
run off with the trophy after checking you were OK. That trophy will
now carry the name David Brown, who with a score of 81.35% was
almost 6% ahead of everyone else. Well done David.
The presentations didn’t stop
there. This year was the first chance for pilots to enter a contest
as part of a team. I’d hoped this new element would prove popular
and spark a little extra friendly rivalry around the playground. I
think it worked and the new BAeA Team Trophy was won by the team
formed in the deep south, well Sussex, Team Confederates. Well done
Gents and my thanks to all the pilots for entering into the spirit
of the team thing.
More
thanks have to go to Sherburn Aero Club for once again welcoming our
circus to their superb airfield. Thanks to Ian Scott and his team of
judges and assistants who worked through our entire field without so
much as comfort break, despite sitting next to a huge pile of
manure. Thanks to Jen and Jack for our scores and Ed for the trophy.
I hope your Edge is fixed soon. Biggest thank you must go to the
pilots who once again conducted themselves impeccably, in the air at
least, and it’s this level of businesslike professionalism that
ensures host airfields invite us back year after year. Good show
everyone.
My check list for next year now reads - sunhat,
wellies, surprise unknown that we didn’t get to fly and, oh yes,
wasp repellent!!
