The British Glider National Championships - 2014

CD's Report
Buckminster Gliding Club lies roughly midway between the villages of Saltby and Skillington in lovely countryside just north of Rutland, based of course on yet another of those WW2 left-overs from the almost forgotten era of B17 bombers and 'over here' Yanks. Just enough of Saltby airfield survives to provide the basis for several hundred metres of 25/07 and a rather rough adjoining section of 02/20 - more than enough for a national glider championship, all the more when run by such a progressive and friendly club with a great range of modern facilities. Saltby is now pretty much the 'go-to' place for glider aeros in the UK, and as such has developed an enviable reputation over the past few years.

The weather, having been a blast the previous week, didn't exactly play ball ... quite a few hopeful pilots who came to Saltby for sign-off at a higher category failed to get enough flying in to reach the required standard, and so carried on at their existing level of privilege. One or two even decided their standards were not up to snuff and declined to fly, thus we proceeded with a field of 16 hopeful pilots that represented all five categories.

At glider and power national events we always try to import the services of an experienced CIVA judge, and this year we had the pleasure of Bernard Courtois' company from France. In fact the judging line was quite a foreign affair, accommodating BAeA member Rod Herve (also originally from France),
Hannah Räihä (from Finland) and our very own Graham Saw as the 'anchor' Brit. In addition, Leif Culpin almost abandoned his usual photographic duties to act as Bernard's assistant, making for a strong judiciary panel.

The scramble to assemble and review the Free Unknown figures for the Advanced and Unlimited pilots was ably handled by BAeA's Head of Competition Brian McCartney on the Wednesday evening while CD Nick B was away collecting Bernard from Stansted, so by the start of business on day-1 Cindy had deftly assembled the necessary paperwork and everything was theoretically in place for a full-on event. Once again however the weather had other ideas ... gloom and drizzle prevailed for pretty much the whole day; one
down, three to go.

The remaining three days provided the usual mix of just-about-acceptable cloud-base, although we did have to resort to splitting D
ietmar Poll's Free programme right at the end of the Friday evening; Dietmar kindly acknowledged that fellow unlimited pilots Paul Conran and David-John Gibbs could if possible fly theirs without a break on Saturday morning, and so it proved to be. Neither however could match the Austrian's performance, the remaining top-level competitive spirit being directed toward trying to oust the other from the second slot. Ultimately this was an extremely close run thing ...

The Sports level, being the most populous, was largely dominated by the fine performances of Alex Harris, ably chased by Dubliner
Fran McLoughlin and the rest. At Intermediate Peter Sharphouse in his lovely new SZD-59 Acro made David Gethin in the club's ASK-21 work very hard for second slot, while Adam Hoskin's strong driving of the Fox kept him just ahead of Chris Cain's unstinting efforts. At unlimited the game was (a) to try and keep up with Dietmar, and (b) for Paul to best DJ and vice-versa ... and very close it was too; Paul was fine until he made a complete hash of the Unknown and left the door wide open for DJ to catch up, but try as he might it was not to be. Maybe next time ... !

So after three pretty hard days we had worthy champions at every level, plus BGC's very own manager Tim Beasley who broke his duck at Beginners level with a creditable 71 and a bit percent. Rutland's finest aristocrat David was as usual on hand to present the prizes, and everything was neatly packed away by 1700 on the last day. Definitely a very pleasant weekend's flying, which monsieur Courtois professed that he had greatly enjoyed too.
