The Saltby Open, 2019 results
Friday, had great weather forecast with the following two days looking slightly less good.
We had 8 Entrants across the 4 levels with a lot of last minute swaps as pilots rushed to get FE's at new levels, remember Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance !
Given the dropping forecast and the low number of entrants the plan was to get all the flying done on the Friday.
With great help from the Saltby Tug pilots and ground crew we just managed to stick to the plan.
As always Saltby gave us a great competition, the whole club organisation more or less put the entire airfield clubhouse catering and other facilities at out exclusive disposal for the period of the competition. Particular thanks to Rodger Hamilton who for another year did a superb job of herding the cats into a stream of flights in the box.
Thanks also to the catering crew in the kitchen who supplied pilot fuel in the form of large 'full English breakfasts' and an endless supply of bacon rolls.
Friday weather was good if not quite as good as forecast with some unhelpful Cu arriving around mid day needing some pilots in the first sequence to fly split programs. It got better later in the day and the second flight was all flown to full height with no problems in the box.
For the first time I remember the NOTAM seemed to work at Saltby and we had zero incidences of UFO's in the box.
A lack of a dedicated scorer meant that no results got processed until after all the flying was completed and so much interest as the scores finally trickled out. If anyone is looking for a interesting position as Glider Scoring Director please apply asap.
Saturday weather showed the wisdom of rushing to get the flying done on Friday as no gliders launched at Saltby all day due to rain and low cloud.
Next competition for the glider people is the Nationals, this year for the first time it is being held at Lasham rather than Saltby and at present Paul Conran is short of a CD/CJ/Registrar, so anyone able to help please get in touch with Paul asap.
Thanks again to the team at Saltby for another great event.
