Contest Report

In the week preceding the contest, the weather had changed between cavok all day,  fire and brimstone to that we experienced, some isolated cells and variable wind which was veering almost 90° between the ground and 3000’.

With the attendance figures predicted we decided to reduce the contest to a single day and thus allow both the pilots and organising team the opportunity to gain some family based brownie points.

At 06:00 on Saturday morning the sky was clear, blue and inviting, upon arrival at 08:30 however, the weather was looking moody and as I wandered into the briefing room, I started getting wet, typical.

It wouldn’t be a British contest without at least some reference to the weather, and based on the balmy summer we’ve had there has been scant opportunity to do so ?

Once the arriving pilots had unpacked and set themselves up for contest flying we went through the briefing, disseminating all the necessary safety procedures and information until just after 11:00 local, we were underway with the first victim…I mean contestant.

We managed 4 flights before the first rain arrived and as it wasn’t just a passing shower, the judges returned to the clubhouse, had a civilised luncheon in the cafe rather than the usual judging line rush job. An hour later, the rain cell had passed and we were back up and running.

The afternoon progressed swiftly with a few pilots needing to watch out for rain showers but all got completed in the end.

Due to the numbers we were only able to successfully contest the Tiger and McLean trophies but with a high level of performance it was all in good sport.

That as they say, is a wrap, the last contest of the 2026 season completed and planning for the 2027 is already underway.

Many thanks to the team at Fenland airfield for allowing us to come and take over, Heidi who has been my liaison, Ray in the tower and Andy in the cafe, there are many others also behind the scenes, so thank you all. Hopefully we are welcome back next year.

On the day I am very grateful for the continuing support of Judges, Assistants, Scoring team, Videographer and of course the pilots and their long suffering families.

Thanks also, to the BA crew behind the scenes who compile & validate the sequences,  liaise and agree the airfields, build and compile the contest data to name but a few roles
