Hi from Granada,
We have had a productive day here with all the Q flights flown. Gerald
was first to fly this morning and had a good flight, very accurate and
finished well above the bottom of the box. Tom's flight was delayed due
to a
practice session by a formation team ahead of the airshow on
Sunday. In hindsight the delay was a good thing, because the opportunity
for Tom to provide a forthright Yorkshire commentary on the quality of
the formation flying relaxed him before his flight. The commentary was
also much more entertaining than the display. Tom put in a very god
performance with only minor errors and some excellent flick rolls - lots
of incidence shown. "Good Job Tommy" is how Eric described it.
There was then a long gap between Toms flight and Nick,
who had drawn a very late slot in the running order (49 out of 51). A
very late change to the running order meant that Nick flew one slot
earlier than expected, but despite this Nick flew an extremely good
sequence. Figure 1 was very accurately flown, probably the best figure
in the sequence. The only significant error was a slightly soft half
negative snap on Figure 2 which over rotated about 10 degrees. Jurgis
Kairis was watching and talked to Nick about the sequence later in the
evening - Jurgis thought it was a good sequence as well.
The flights were completed at about 2100 and
the results have just been published. The "Online results" link
in the top bar (to http:civaweb.mservices.net) has the full

Tom's result is excellent. He really did fly very well
and it reflects a lot of hard work in training. We feel that Gerald's
and Nick's scores are lower than we would have expected having seen the
quality of the flights. But overall, all of the pilots flew well and we
are very
pleased with the team performance. However, this is only the Q.
The results are used to determine the order of flight for the Free
Programme (Tom and Gerald will be in the top group of pilots flying the
Free which is excellent and Mark, Nick, Kester and Richard should be in
the second group which will give them more time to prepare for their
flights). But the results themselves do not count towards the final
placings. If we are to win medals we have to raise our game, fly
consistently well and get more of our pilots into the top twenty. But
this is an excellent start and Tom deserves many congratulations for his
performance today.
The briefing tomorrow will include drawing of the
Unknown Figures for the First Unknown and setting the flying order for
the Free Programme. I will send you more information tomorrow.
So its game on in Granada!
